My first thought is "Hide yo bong, hide yo trees, cause they arrest'n everyone up in here". I look outside and yep, he's right, there are three cops and two cop cars across the street. Time for some serious toker face! I cross the street, using the crosswalk like a good citizen. I walk up to the cops and... Me: Hi, I'm [NomadNorCal], and I understand you called and were looking for me? Cop1: Yes sir, we were. Do you own a Honda? Me: Yes, it's parked right over... Huh? O_o Cop2: So, I'm guessing that's new damage? Me: Um, yeah. It had a bumper when I parked it. :-( Cop1: We got a call from someone who chased down an 18 wheeler and stopped the truck. They saw it get hit when the driver made a turn and scraped against it. The truck driver didn't feel it because he scraped the back tires of his container on it. Cop3: Yeah, I took the initial report, noted that there appeared to be paint transfer on his truck. The driver is very cooperative and is accepting responsibility. Me: Wow, that's good! Cop1: Here's a card with all the drivers info, his insurance info, the witness info, and the police report number. Do you have insurance? Me: Yeah, I'll just let them handle it. Thanks! Cop2: If we can be of any further assistance with your insurance company, just give us a call. Me: Thanks so much. Cops1: I hope your day goes much better sir. Me: I'll just get it towed and grab a rental tomorrow. Thanks again officers! Walked back into my apartment, called dad to tell him why they were looking for me. Called my insurance company, an auto body place, and had it towed. Later that afternoon the truck driver called me to apologize. He called the cops and asked for my phone number. We had a friendly chat and I said, "Hey, if you drive for a living you'll make a million turns a year, and one eventually won't go as planned. Accidents happen, it's okay, that's why we pay for insurance." I got the car back and it looks awesome!! The driver took full responsibility with the insurance company and it didn't cost me a dime. I know there are so many stories about cops arresting people, tasering people, shooting dogs, and 'If you do this, then FUCK YOU' stories on reddit. This is just a friendly reminder that not all cops are assholes, and not everyone is irresponsible or a 'scumbag' about things. People can be pretty cool sometimes. TL;DR - Cops looking for me, not to harass me, but to help me out after a truck swiped my car. Driver is very cool, calls to apologize, and accepts fault. edit1 - When I posted this I figured maybe 10 or 15 people might see this and get a smile from it, then it would be lost in the posting abyss. The /trees community is awesome!!! I saw some comments that raised my eyebrow. I didn't post this to just convey that the cops were nice, professional, and helpful, but that everyone stepped up. I saw a few "Fuck the cops" and "..doing their jobs" comments. I also saw a few "must be white" comments. Stereotyping is a very natural defense mechanism we all have, and one I had myself with my initial, "Hide yo bong, hide yo trees, cause they arrest'n everyone up in here" response. I just want to point out that we sometimes need to take a step back from that, and realize that we're all just human beings.
